Late last week Congress succeeded in passing Section 735, aka the Monsanto Protection Act or the Monsanto Rider, in the Continuing Resolution spending bill – HR 933.
By sneaking Section 735 into a federal appropriations bills, Monsanto has successfully planted a dangerous provision in US law. Essentially, the provision would create a precedent-setting limitation on judicial review while opening the door for quick release of new, untested genetically engineered crops- like the 13 GE crops queued up for approval.
In the wake of the biotech industry’s behemoth lobbying power, the American people must come together and continue to take action. OSGATA ally and member Food Democracy Now! is spearheading a movement to protect our country from unchecked corporate power.
Yesterday Food Democracy Now! electronically delivered more than 200,000 comments to the White House demonstrating the American people’s uproar against the Monsanto Protection Act.
With only 24 hours remaining, we are rallying to keep this pressure on the White House. We need every individual voice to amplify the message: Tell President Obama to veto the Monsanto Protection Act.
Co-founders of Food Democracy Now!, Dave Murphy and Lisa Stokke, will hand-deliver the signatures tomorrow- Obama’s last day to sign, or not sign, the appropriations bill into law. Obama is unable to line-veto Section 735 and must instead veto the entire bill- H.R. 933.
They are hoping to increase our voices 10-fold by tomorrow in order to show our President that we value our democracy, our seeds, and the health and vibrancy of our future generations. If you’re in Washington, DC, Food Democracy Now! invites you to meet in front of the White House tomorrow, Wednesday, March 27, at 12pm EST when the signatures will be hand-delivered.
