Why Help OSGATA? Because Organic Begins with Seed.
The Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) is the one national membership organization run by organic farmers and dedicated to protecting organic seed− and therefore your right of access to good organic food. Help us continue our important seed work by donating today.
So just how important is organic seed to you?
Does the concept of high quality organic seed grown by family farmers and brought to the market by independent seed companies meet your definition of how the seed business should be conducted? Do you believe that the forced entry of chemical companies like Monsanto into the seed world, with their patented GE seed technology and unconscionable farmer-licensing agreements, severely restricts genetic resources and sovereignty?
If you believe we can− that we must− do a better job expanding seed freedom, please consider donating to OSGATA today. We believe organic begins with seed, and our commitment to organic seed is grounded in the farmers. As a farmer-driven organization, we rely on your support to succeed. Give now so we remain strong and effective in 2014 and beyond.
With the help of our members and supporters, OSGATA has increased our capacity to protect, promote, and develop the organic seed trade. In 2013 we continued our work:
Fighting to protect organic seed integrity and farmers’ and consumers’ rights. OSGATA forged ahead in the landmark legal battle, the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association et al. v. Monsanto. In January 2013, OSGATA and its Farmer Travel Fund allowed for 18 plaintiff-farmers, from across the U.S. and Canada, to attend the oral argument before the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Responding to the serious risk of transgenic contamination to organic seed integrity. With support of OFRF, OSGATA has undertaken the research and writing of the first comprehensive peer-reviewed organic farmers’ and seed handlers’ manual outlining GE contamination avoidance and testing protocols. This resource will be available as a free download following its debut at the 2014 Organic Seed Growers Conference in Corvallis, OR.
Advocating for organic growers, seed companies, organizations, and concerned citizens. This past year we have submitted comments to the National Organic Standard Board’s committee on GMOs to define industry standards for testing. We’ve also worked hard protecting organic farmers on many other issues, from supporting pollinators to battling unjust seed preemptions.
Working with partners to grow and facilitate networks− such as fostering new market opportunities and connections between organic seed companies and organic seed growers. OSGATA endorsed AOSCA’s Organic Seed Finder Database and is a Bronze Sponsor of the nation’s largest conference dedicated entirely to the organic seed trade, the 2014 Organic Seed Growers Conference.
Please donate to OSGATA today! Together we can build a future in which diverse regionally adapted organic seed matches the production and culinary demands of the growing organic community. Because organic begins with seed, our success lays the foundation for the permanence of organic agriculture.
