Don’t Miss the 2015 Heirloom Expo!

The 5th annual National Heirloom Exposition kicks off next week (September 8-10) at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, in Santa Rosa, California. Heralded as the “World’s Pure Food Fair,” the event is co-organized by the Petaluma Seed Bank in nearby Petaluma, CA, and boasts the world’s largest display of heirloom vegetables.

In true county fair fashion, attendees can see the pages of seed catalogs come to life in a timely exhibition of the harvest season. But at the Heirloom Expo, particular homage is paid to the heritage of the seed. Attendees can bask in the diversity cultivated by our agrarian forebears, glimpsing tall towers of exotic-looking squash, sampling a kaleidoscope of tomatoes, and swapping seed stories of their own.

The expo also includes a very full schedule of educational demonstrations, speakers, and “happenings” like giant pumpkin and heirloom cuisine contests.

OSGATA joins this massive assembly of pure food enthusiasts, talented home gardeners, farmers, chefs, and food industry leaders. OSGATA President and organic seed farmer Jim Gerritsen is slated to present twice on Thursday, September 10. At 11:30am PST, Gerritsen addresses “How Real Organic is at Risk, Strong Standards under Threat.” Later, at 7:10pm PST, Gerritsen partners with renowned activist and author Vandana Shiva, and Food Democracy Now! co-founders, Dave Murphy and Lisa Stokke, to present “Reclaim your Seed Heritage, Reclaim your Democracy: Monsanto Seed Patents and Farmers, Where are We Now?” See the full speaker schedule here.
