Monsanto prevails again at U.S. Supreme Court- Farmweek

Published on Jan 17, 2014

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) let stand a lower court which upheld Monsanto's claims on its genetically-engineered seed patents. A group of organic farmers sought to legally bar Monsanto from suing farmers whose crops were contaminated accidentally with Monsanto genetically material. The group also challenged Monsanto's patent rights. Monsanto said it has not and will not sue farmers whose crops are accidentally contaminated with Monsanto's patented genetic material. Monsanto said it would not, however, make that promise legally-binding for fear it would prompt some farmers to intentionally grow crops with Monsanto traits (and avoiding paying technology assessments to Monsanto).

The video opens in Foley Square, New York City on the day of the oral arguments before Judge Naomi Buchwald of the Southern District of New York on Monsanto's motion to dismiss the lawsuit: Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) et al. v. Monsanto. The film reviews the record and history of Monsanto as well as the issues and arguments of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. It proceeds with a video report on the point of view and knowledge of the public and concludes with a more detailed discussion of the health and political issues with Alexis Baden-Mayer, the political director of the Organic Consumers Association, and Don Patterson, the organizing plaintiff of the OSGATA et al. v. Monsanto lawsuit. The film ends with a condemnation of food libel laws in the United States and the legislators who have written those laws to protect agribusiness interests at the expense of the people and the environment. The film is divided into two 51 minute parts to accommodate an Intermission or a two-part showing of the film.

Organic Farmers Vs Monsanto - Jim Gerritsen

March 13, 2013

http://NextNewsNetwork.com | http://osgata.org For some people, the statement "No farms means no food" is obvious. But millions of people never give the matter even a minute's thought. They simply assume that food spontaneously materializes on the shelves of the local grocery store. Many of those same people never spend a second wondering what is in the food products they put into their shopping carts -- including the produce that they think is a healthy alternative to canned and packaged items. In recent years, a growing number of consumers and food producers in the United States and overseas have demanded truth in labeling regarding the use of genetically engineered foods, commonly referred to as GMOs. Leading the struggle to prevent transparency is the global agribusiness combine Monsanto, the leading producer of genetically modified seeds. Monsanto, it should be noted, is the same company that produced Agent Orange and dioxin. Numerous studies have documented the health risks of consuming GMOs, which is why their use has been banned in countries in Europe and Latin America. Here in the United States, Monsanto is for all intents and purposes an arm of the federal government. Scores of key government officials have passed through the revolving door between the biotech industry and federal regulatory agencies. Monsanto and its allies are increasingly using both government regulatory agencies and private security companies to harass and persecute independent farmers who are resisting the onslaught of GMOs. What is being done to oppose the Monsanto-led biotech juggernaut? We have the privilege today of speaking with a leader of the resistance. In addition to running a small organic farm in Maine, Jim Gerritsen is president of the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, or OSGTA. He is spearheading a class-action lawsuit against Monsanto that was filed last spring on behalf of 270,000 family farmers, gardeners, and consumers. Jim and his colleagues are seeking to keep at least some food crops free of genetic modification.
